Brief conversation with Phil Ryan (COO, SOMAVAC® Medical)

The transcript features a conversation between Abigail and Phil Ryan, who is the Chief Operating Officer at Silverback, a company he joined in 2019 after working at a large medical device manufacturer. Phil discusses his transition from a large company to a smaller, nimble organization like Silverback. He outlines the roles he has taken on, including operations, engineering, and even minor tasks due to the size of the company. Phil emphasizes the advantages of working in a smaller company, such as quicker responsiveness to customer needs and efficiency in making product changes without the bureaucracy typical of larger organizations. He also shares personal advice for individuals considering a move from a large to a small company, highlighting the need for flexibility, willingness to re-engage with hands-on tasks, and an appreciation for the inherent uncertainties of startup environments. His motivation for moving to a smaller company stems from his early career experiences and the close-knit, goal-oriented culture that small companies offer.

‘Smart’ pump latest medical device created in Memphis

The article discusses the innovations made by SOMAVAC in surgical drain technology, led by CEO Esra Roan. SOMAVAC has developed a device that automates the draining and collection of surgical fluids, improving upon the traditional Jackson-Pratt bulb, which has been the standard for decades. This technology offers advantages like continuous negative pressure, which reduces complications and improves recovery, and allows for the sterile collection of fluids for research purposes. As the company expands, they plan to increase their workforce and market reach, having already received FDA clearance and substantial venture capital investment.

Suzanne’s Experience with Drains Speaks Volumes

As a three time, nine year breast cancer survivor, I have had multiple surgeries that have required Jackson Pratt drains. I found these drains to be inconvenient, messy and quite frankly, gross. They were a nightmare. As I was being discharged from one hospital visit, the dangling Jackson Pratt drain tubing became entangled in my wheelchair spoke and was literally ripped from my body and slung down the hospital corridor.

PROVIDING COMPASSIONATE CARE: Mental Wellness of Breast Cancer Patients

Research shows that many breast cancer patients fight a secondary battle with mental health as they return home from cancer treatment. They suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and other mental health conditions which can have a negative impact on patients’ path to recovery.
